
CHARACTERISTICS OF A GREAT CLOSER
Closing is really not closing . . .
Does that surprise you? It probably does. The topic of ‘Closing’ is one of the most requested for my trainings for our network marketing team and when I speak for other teams. Why, because people are uncomfortable with the the word.
Whether you are young or old, a newcomer or more seasoned, closing is a topic that always comes up. It is a topic that crosses all demographics. While men are somewhat more comfortable in asking ‘the question’ than women, statistics show there is no difference in the follow-up.
So I ask you, what comes to mind when you think of ‘Closing’? Do you think of pushy, sales, and a lot of negative feelings. I used to.
The reality is CLOSING, when done right, is nothing more than opening a long-term relationshp (or strengthening an existing one).
The bottomline is, Closing takes practice, and practice makes perfect. It’s really just about Relationships, Listening, and Asking . . . and remembering to follow-up when you get the first no, which you will!

When you look in the mirror, what do you see?
Or should I ask did you look in the mirror? WHAT does the world see when they see you?
Are you pulled together and polished? Or . . .
Perhaps there is another image you are trying to convey?
Saturday when I was out to dinner with my husband, I looked at him and he looked at me and we both thought there is something definitely wrong here. Trust me, it could have been a whole section is Cosmo’s ‘Dos and Don’ts.
I won’t tell you the name of the restaurant, but when the hostesses have dresses that are too tight on the bottom and too loose on top and their clothes are probably one size too small not to mention their grooming just needs help, you begin to wonder.
Then you look at the patrons who you think would know better (because of their age . . . 50 to 60ish), and they are the same. It was interesting people watching to say the least.
Why do I say to this?
YOU HAVE ONE SHOT AT A FIRST IMPRESSION
In so many ways . . .
1) The Way You Look (the way you dress your package)
2) The Way You Introduce Yourself (your elevator speech)
3) Your Business Card/Your Presentation Materials (Your Image)
4) Your Brand (that’s a whole additonal article)
Point One
So why is it important that you are pulled together in a neat (if not professional manner)?
How you look subconsciously tells people how you conduct business (if you are successful). It doesn’t mean you have to go around wearing designer suits and handbags, it DOES mean you need to wear clothes that are clean, neat, and well put together and flattering.
If you don’t know what’s flattering, invest $200 with an image consultant and try different styles so you can get an unbiased opinion.
As I was recently reminded, if you haven’t changed you hairstyle in 20 years, YOU NEED TO! That was me!
Make sure your hair is neat, and you’ve at least got some lipstick on (for the girls ). . .
I generally only put makeup on when I’m doing a speaking engagement, presenting our business, on a hot date with my husband, or am having lunch with friends.

Point Two
What are you saying about your business?
Think about What you like best about what you do. What unique problem do you solve for your clients?
From a potential client’s perspective, what can youtell them in 15 seconds that they will want to know . . .
WHAT’S IN IT FOR THEM?
If you were to write yourself a testimonial letter, what would it say?
Last but not least, ask for a call to action as part of your introduction.
So to recap:
Tell them what solution you provide (a benefit they can expect from working with you)
Tell them what’s in it for them
Tell them what action you want them to take (go to your website for a fr.ee report)
Point Three
Your Business Card should always be handy . . .
There is a whole psychology behind the design of a business card that gets results, but here are a few quick points:
1. Name
2. A professional email — preferably branded (your name or business)
3. A single phone number
4. Your Website
5. A reason to go to your website (fr.ee gift)
6. A great photo of you (without a photo of you, when you are gone, you will be forgotten)
7. A brief testimony, and a guarantee
Point Four
Your Brand should be who you are —
How you do anything . . .
Is how you do everything.
In other words, how you do one thing in life, translates how you do other ‘areas’ of your life.
So, when dashing out the door to just pick up a few things, LOOK in the mirror. When you are just running a few errands, LOOK in the mirror and check your briefcase or handbag (are you prepared to make a professional impression).
Here’s something that should make you feel better . . .
I’m a mom of two fairly young kids (ages 9 and 12). Generally, I am wearing either nice shorts, a summer skirt, or yoga pants with a shirt. The shorts are from Talbot’s and fit nicely (not too short — they look professional), The skirt is comfortable (remember it’s hot in Florida). Now the shirts, are ALWAYS, are NICE — either a button shirt or a high end knit shirt (not a crew neck T-shirt). The shirts are always embroidered with our logo–many times it will start a conversation. In two weeks, we’ll be at Disneyworld. I’ll be wearing shorts or a skirt, an embroidered tank top and an embroidered VISOR.
Not too long ago, I saw another mom from a different company in stained clothes with a shirt that had a hole in it and she handed me a business card that had bent edges as we were standing by her car that was a complete disaster inside (amess). This was a woman who was clearly not in control of her personal life OR her business life. IF she was successful, it did not show. I would not do business with her because of the impression she left. (See Point 1 above with the Cosmo Donts)
Who would you rather do business with . . . Look Great (you’ll feel better), be prepared. And bring home the business!

Independence

MOVING ON TO THINGS TO MAKE YOU GO HMMM. . .
Over 200 years ago, American revolutionaries declared that all people are and must be free to pursue their personal goals.

I would venture to say that it’s not only Americans that share this philosophy — People from around the world struggle for the LIBERTY that we American sometimes take for granted.
If you are not living the life you want, be sure to spend a little time over the next week and think about the kind of life you want to create — our forefathers made sure you were given the right.
Start by thinking about what you LOVE — what you’re thankful for. We call this the attitude of gratitude!
Next, list your resources and your talents – don’t be modest — I bet you have a few you’ve forgotten.
Now, list what kind of life you want in all areas . . .
1. Health
2. Spiritual
3. Family
4. Relationships
5. Community-Acts of Service – Charity
6. Business
7. Financial
When you have the picture of what you want, list 3 action steps that you can take — including one that you can take within the week (WOW the next 7 days) to move you closer to your goal for the year.
Now we need to get rid of the clutter. . . What do you want LESS of in your life? We all have some junk in our life we could stand to get rid of. Whether it’s physical junk (as in stuff in our closets, garages, or messy offices), or too busy calendars, or maybe even negative people. Think about it . . . it might take a while to get you head around a some of your ‘junk.’
Last, but certainly not least, what brings you JOY & HAPPINESS. Be sure to have a good measure of this. We all need moments of joy.
For me, MY BIGGEST JOY IS MY CHILDREN. When I am with my children and see them learning something new OR see them playing with friends or achieving a new accomplishment, I am filled with joy.
This year it seems my children are growing too fast — especially my son. Just this morning I got a call from the Virgina Mountains. Many of you I am not a morning person — so I missed his call. Darn!

You see, on Friday at 7 pm I picked him up from one Boy Scout camp and we had 9 hours to turn him around and get him ready for his HIGH ADVENTURE Boy Scout Camp– Departure was at 4 am. I had everything ready and we packed his back pack — but I think the kid was too exhausted to remember where we put his money.
That’s what he was calling me for. He needed money for a new belt, his broke. He was very excited about this trip. He’ll be hiking 8 miles every morning and then be rappelling, and mountain boarding, and tomahawk throwing and learning about wilderness survival skills in the afternoon. I’m excited — my little 12 1/2 year old boy (who is not so little) will be having a ball this week with his fellow Scouts.
I thankful his wonderful friends the Christian men who are his Leaders.
My daughter, Amanda is a JOY too. She has had fun with my husband Mark lighting off fire-crackers and BIG sparklers preparing for tonight. She is excited that next week is Girl Scout camp. She has been busy sewing all summer with her Grandma and playing with one of her good friends, Maggie. This week we are going to work on learning speed reading (I learned when I was in 4th grade too). Here is a picture of my two Pincesses (Amanda) and our Rott, who really is named ‘Princess.’

This Friday, she gets to go to a weekend Girl Scout Camp and has her first crack at Archery — she is VERY excited. She loves to try new things!

My sister and brother-in-law are proudly serving in the Air Force (20 years for my sister) and my brother proudly served in the Gulf War in the Navy and now keeps us safe with Homeland Security. If we are to be good at relationship building, it’s got to be about giving without thought of getting. We know at a deep level that when you give freely and without expectation, others will be there for you when the need arises.
Good Networking is all about building relationships — Sandra Yancey, the CEO of eWomenNetwork and she teaches that Relationship Networking is an Attitude not a Destination.
If you come from a place of scarcity, that is exactly what you will attract.
Sandra shares in her book ‘Relationship networkers know that it is by connecting the right people with the right challenges and opportunities that companies, careers, and lives will be built and made better.’
To me networking is about making a difference — and indeed we need many networks. Whether you are in Corporate America, a Community Volunteer, a student, a solopreneur, brand new to network marketing or a seaseoned MLM professional, the key is to make a difference in other peoples’ lives.
Here are the 7 Essential Networks:
1) Spiritual — where we worship and the ministries we get involved with
2) Social — who are our friends and family
3) Professional — we need to belong to our profession’s industry organizations.
4) Ethnic — if you have ties to ethnic and/or cultural communities, this network can be critical to you.

5) Gender — Particularly women – we are natural networkers – socializers.
6) Community Service – translates into volunteer work.
7) Interests or Hobbies – be part of a club that celebrates the activities you like to do!
By striving for a life that is full, you will find your own strength and have more to give to others. As women, we tend to focus on the details, which once again highlights our strengths and what we can contribute to our networks — don’t agonize over what you don’t have, focus on what you have to share.
Dr. John Maxwell notes that in our networking connections people are asking 3 Questions About Us:
1) Do You Care For Me? Mutual concern creates connection between people.
2) Can You Help Me? In his book, Presenting to Win, Jerry Weissman points out that when people communicate, they focus too much on the features of their product or service instead of answering the question, ‘Can you help me?’
3) Can I Trust You? Have you ever bought a car? If so, how was the experience? For many people, it wasn’t so good. In your Professional Network (and others) what are people saying about you?
Last but not least, the biggest piece of advice I received more than 20 years ago when I started on my career in the ‘People’ business is one I want to share with you — it has served me EXTREMELY WELL!
As you go through your daily activities which will happen just by the nature of living your life . . .
Be more INTERESTED instead of INTERESTING to the people you talk with!
A last piece of networking advice . . .at official events, you need a tool kit. Here are some suggestions:
1) Business Cards. With one phone number, one email, and one website. A photo is good so people can remember you!

2) Name Tags. If you regularly go to events (luncheons, dinners, mixers), you may want to invest in a magnetic nametag that has your company logo on it — and your name in colors that stand out.
3) Your Personal Introduction. Practice, Practice, Practice — your 15 second introduction (sometimes referred to as an ‘elevator’ speech.
4) Set your intention before attending the event. Decide which 3 to 5 people you want to meet at the event you are attending and be prepared to create meaningful conversations with them.
5) Give the Gift of Your Presence. This means you do more than just arrive at the event. You must be fully present. Don’t check your Blackberry or iPhone.
6) Be a Good Listener. Be a Heart Centered Listener. Remember, be more interested than interesting.
7) Expressing Appreciation. Thank You notes are not an option — the are essential. Emails are not acceptable. Stock up on some nice note cards and write them while you are waiting in line. It’s a great opportunity to include a referral’s business card or a note or article of interest.

We All Have The Same 86,400 Seconds
Do you ever wonder how you can fit more activities into the 86,400 seconds you have each day to spend?
Or, better yet, where you should invest the 86,400 you DO HAVE? It’s hard to know how to carve that
BIG chunk of change up . . . it seems to disappear much too quickly EVERY DAY!
It was so fitting that when I was recently reading in Dr. John Maxwell’s Self-Improvement 101 Book,
Chapter 5 is indeed titled:
‘Where Should I Focus My Time and Energy?’
This is a good question — so many people (me included) get sidetracked.
Some people, if you watch them, do what I call majoring in the minors–invest BIG chunks of time
in projects or segments of their life that will have no impact. Other people will trip over dollars to save pennies–they just don’t get the BIG picture. You probably have known someone like this.
But, I’m guessing this is not you . . .
We all have a gift — what is YOURS?
Do you ever think about what would you be doing each day if you weren’t busy earning a living OR are you already doing it?
HOW DO YOU GET TO YOUR WHY?
Spend a few minutes of quiet time thinking about what you do great. What your ‘thing’ is. This ‘thing’ will lead you to you mission or purpose. We call it your WHY. By being laser focused on your WHY (purpose) and having a servant’s heart, you not only benefit others but you find happiness.
Here are Dr. John’s Insider Tips:
1. Ask, ‘What am I doing well?’
2. Get Specific
3. Listen for what others praise about you
4. Check out your competition
Now comes the hard(er) part. You’ve got to play it forward.
Ask these questions
a) Are others doing what I’m doing?
b) Are they doing it well?
c) Are they doing it better than I am?
d) Can I become better than they are?
e) If I do become better, what will be the result?
f) If I don’t become better, what will be the result?
You must find and develop the strengths of your people.
When you work with a strong TEAM, the members of your TEAM will grow stronger–so pick a good TEAM!

It’s Not Who You Might Think . . .

If you are not already in the industry, these numbers may surprise you. If you are, I can almost guarantee you’ll be surprised. And different reasons for both.
Three weeks ago I began gathering research for a presentation I was preparing for the following week. This topic is important because after all, we want to spend our time recruiting the people who are looking for us, not to mention, we want to place our advertising dollars in the venues where the most prospects will be!
Having recently attended the Direct Selling Women’s Alliance (DSWA) Annual Celebration in Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Nicki Keohohou, the CEO and chatting about some of the changes that have taken place in the last 12 to 24 months in our industry. This event, in my opinion, is right up there with your company’s convention if you are serious about building a profitable business. The content is excellent and the value high.
One of the segments was on diversity relating to the direct sales industry — the statistics were so staggering, I couldn’t write fast enough, so I vowed when I got home I would do more research and present this information to our local Meet Up Group (www.HowToSucceedInMLMToday.com) which is 80+ members strong from 30+ different companies in South Florida.
Why?
Because we are in a NEW ECONOMY.
Whether you have a job you love, own a business you are passionate about, have been newly downsized or are recently retired, most people today recognize multiple streams of income are necessary and having a ‘Plan B’ is mandatory.
With 14.8 million people — nearly 10% (9.7%) of the American population jobless in February 2010, we’ve all been impacted in different ways. And these numbers don’t include the ‘under’ employed — those people who have taken a job beneath their skill level just to put food on the table.
The direct sales/network marketing industry is seeing a significant increase in recruiting because people do not want to be dependent upon Corporate America. In 2008 (latest year for figures), the US reported more that 16 million direct sellers and $30 BILLION in direct sales. And, it’s not just in the US — global numbers are 62 million people and $114 Billion in sales.
The statistics above are fairly easy to come by — but getting to the bottom of WHO exactly is joining our business TODAY was shall we say a bit more challenging. I would compare it to breaking into Fort Knox . . .

After almost many phone calls, numerous emails, called in favors, I was finally able to get the most up-to-date numbers our our industry has, most of which come straight from the Direct Selling Association (DSA). We do share some generic demographic numbers from a variety of resources including Miriam Muley, CEO of The 85% Niche, LLC http://www.85percentniche.com and the DSWA
Diversity Center.
Here are some key numbers that are important:
83% of ALL purchases made are influenced by a woman.
85% of all people joining the direct selling/network marketing profession are women.
The fastest growing segment in direct sales is women 60 +.
13% of people choosing the industry are Hispanic females between 18 and 45.
Nine out of ten NEW females in the last decade were Black, Hispanic, or Asian.

WHY are these numbers important?
If you have thought about this industry but were unsure of its legitimacy, the sheer numbers should tell you timing is everything.
If you are in the business, the demographics are important because you want to be where your prospective business partners are.
What I can share with you after building two large organizations numbering more than 15,000 people in 7 different countries is exactly what Dr. John Maxwell talks about in his newest book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently.
People want to know the answers to these questions:
1. Do you care for me?
2. Can you help me?
3. Can I trust you?

When you effectively answer these questions and communicate that you truly care for the person and the relationship, you will build a dynasty and create lifestyle freedom. Building a successful network marketing business does not happen overnight…It’s about relationships and being a person of integrity.

This is a Mother’s Day Tribute to All Women . . .
Who have been blessed to wear their hearts forever on the outside of their chest.
You may have become a mom by default but the outcome is the same, you’re loved. 
When the Lord made Moms, the world smiled — and was forever changed:
Moms have strengths that men amaze men. They carry children, they carry hardships, and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up for injustice. They don’t take “no” for an answer when they believe there is a better solution. They go without new shoes so their children can have them. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally. They cry when their children excel and cheer when their loved ones get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a new marriage. They are strong when they think there is no strength left. They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Mothers come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes. They’ll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show
how much they care about you.
The heart of a mother is what makes the world spin! Mothers do more than just give birth. They bring joy and hope. They give compassion and ideals. They give moral support to their family and friends.
Mothers have a lot to say and a lot to give.

As a mom, we want the best for our kids — we want them to have a better life than we have and we’ll
go the extra mile to make it happen. Having started in the network marketing industry more than 20
years ago, at first part-time, and building a team and peoples’ dreams, I’ve been blessed to be full-time in the industry for 16 years. It’s because of this business that I’ve been able to be the kind of mom I always dreamed of being (the room mom, craft mom, cookie mom, field trip mom, Brownie Leader) and contribute in a big way financially to the support of our family.

Do You Take Time?

Wow — I was away for a week being inspired and growing my vision — which brings me to the topic of this post . . .
Do you have a vision (for you, your family, your _________)?
OR
Do you cast a vision where others can be part of a bigger picture (plug into a TEAM)? Perhaps you are a manager, a mom, a teacher, or boss?

What Can a Vision Do For You?
When you identify your vision, also identify the value it will bring to your life. Really imagine how you would feel. It’s the ‘imagine if’ game. And, for a person who is laser focused on their vision, I can guarantee with activity, it will become a reality.
Sometimes, the ‘identifying’ part takes a while. It’s actually the first step we mentor people in.
We call it ‘Finding Your WHY.’ YOUR WHY becomes the rudder of your ship so to speak guiding your
decisions — helping you stay focused on the BIG picture — while helping you make small decisions.
For some the WHY will be their family (be specific).

Once you identify Your WHY — this means what you want out of life — what you would do in LIFE if
money were not an issue — how your would spend your week — what each day would look like — the
activities you would do, who you would do them with, and where you would be doing them. Where would you live? What kind of car would you drive? Who would you be assisting (with time and/or money)? What would you like to improve (is there a class you want to take)? How about your relationships . . . any you think could come or go? Finances . . . need to create more? Be clear in what your WHY is what and who brings your joy!
THEN,
Identify the price that you are willing to pay to move your vision from a dream to a reality.

2) Do you measure productivity versus Activity?
3) You are strong and capable. Be CLEAR in your PUPOSE (YOUR WHY). LIVE in your PASSION.

ARE YOU A GEN Yer?
Are You Looking For A Job?

If you could work in any profession you wanted — what would it be? How about for any company?
The top 10 companies were just released — and frankly I was disappointed — they were just about the same top 10 companies that were around when I was coming out of college almost 30 years ago (except for Google). The difference . . . is they are more women friendly (meaning women get hired as an entry level professional).

I can tell you from experience and the experience of my friends that most of these companies have great entry level programs.
The programs are designed to identify the ‘cream of the crop’ so to speak.
However, you have to ask yourself before you apply for one of these positions OR send your sons or daughters off, will this position and company culture fulfill them? For many of us, our first couple of jobs are learning experiences.
I happen to believe that because we spend so much of our time ‘at work,’ we better at least like it — if not love it. Hopefully, the company’s mission is worthy, the corporate track offers opportunity, and at the end of the day both you and the company are glad for the experience.
I had two really great jobs in Corporate America — one working for the CEO of The Times Mirror Company (they own the Los Angeles Times and at the time I worked there a whole bunch of TV and Radio stations, other newspapers, like The Denver Post, The Dallas Times Herald, The Hartford Courant, Newsday, the Sporting News, and some book Publishers — Abrams (loved those coffee table books) and others.
The great thing about TMC was I was all of 22 when I started and because I was really good — I was promoted quickly –and ended up working for the CEO. I was chosen to be part of the company’s Olympic Committee for the 1984 Olympics and had the time of my life — it was amazing.
Working in this truly BIG BIG corporate environment with lots of companies reporting to our main office and the CEO was a great experience for a brand new college grad — it was eye opening. It showed I had sooo much more to learn and the world was indeed a very big place with lots of opportunities.
Which lead me to my second job as a financial analyst in Beverly Hills working for one of the smartest most dynamic men I have ever known. He challenged me to do more than I ever thought I was capable of doing. And ultimately caused me to evaluate what I wanted my future to look like — and Corporate America wasn’t in the picture. It took a HUGE leap of faith to go out on my own and change industries — oh but it was so worth it.

I share this with you because all around YOU . . . all around me . . . people have the same challenges. The #1 question on peoples’ minds right now is ‘How do I make money NOW?’ Of course there are other challenges and it’s how people deal with those challenges that defines them.
Some of you may identify with this quote from the world renown Motivational Speaker Jim Rohn
“Let others lead small lives, but not you.
Let others argue over small things, but not you.
Let others cry over small hurts, but not you.
Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.”
I chose to share this quote with you, because once you get on the corporate track, sometimes it’s hard to get off — and it feels like your future is indeed in someone else’s hands — your decisions are no longer your own.
Be pro-active and create a ‘Plan B’ for your life — no one has your back like you do! That’s WHY I got started in network marketing.
We know that Gen Yers are BIG on technology, flexibility, and feedback — so companies that can provide this are attracting the younger worker. However, with a little self-evaluation, I would submit to you that being an entrepreneur is the ultimate Gen Y job.
You do need self-discipline — utilizing techology has exploded our TEAM — and 15 million other people in our industry in North America, the feedback comes in your paycheck (i.e., commission). One of the things I like best is you have a personal mentor who is 100% vested in your success. Flexibility comes from being your own boss and the ability to utilize techology to its fullest extent.
So for those of you not ready to join the corporate ranks — encourage your Generation Yer to check our the world of MLM, Direct Sales, or Network Marketing. Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki (author of of Rich Dad Poor Dad) recommend it highly!
