First Quarter Check In

What’s working?  Yes, it’s time to take a look.

If you are reading this, then you are more than likely SUCCESS minded.  BUT, even when we are focused, positive, and working towards success, it rare that we will have successin all areas of our life.

It’s important to track our growth, our gains, and our gratitude.

While I encourage my TEAM to practice the Hour of Power:

1)  15 Minutes of Listening to Something Positive
2)  15 Minutes of Reading Something Positive
3)  15 Minutes of Journaling (what you learned today, what was great today, who you helped today, what you are grateful for, and what you could do better tomorrow)
4)  15 Minutes to plan your day tomorrow — with your top 3 goals (meaning what 3 things could you work on that would move you towards your goal.

So, if this is not a regular habit for you, at least have a quarterly check-in.  I encourage you to evaluate your life on more than just a professional level.  How do you rate:

    In your spiritual life?
    In your physical health (are you exercising and eating right)
    In your personal relationships
    In your family life
    In your financial life (tithing, donations, savings, investing)
    In your service to others
    In your professional life?

Yes, all of these are pieces to the puzzle of life — and sometimes we need to adjust the pieces for a better fit. 

Many times I have had to make adjustments whether it’s in parenting or being more consistent in reading the Bible OR in income producing marketing.

It is something you need no matter where you are in life:

 Yes – Attitude is Everything.

At the last company I partnered with – New Vision (for almost 14 years, now known as Vemma) – the CEO, BK Boreyko, had the customer service reps answer the phones at one point ‘Attitude is Everything.’  The customer service reps were so excited they said it so fast that it sounded like ‘We’re out of Everything.’

Are you excited about what you’re doing?

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

BUT, it’s so much more than loving what you do . . .

It is about attitude.

It’s about doing our best  . . . no matter what  . . . no matter what the task

(Whether making presentation to 500, doing a meet up for 5, folding the laundry, or helping your daughter with her first sewing project.)

I have been reading Dr. John Maxwell’s Three Books in One Volume – The Winning Attitude ** Developing the Leaders Around You ** Becoming a Person of Influence and in just the first few chapters, it reminded me how important Attitude is to everything we do and everyone around us.  It influences EVERYTHING we do!

As part of my morning routine, I read the Bible – which fills me up for the day ‘full of good stuff’ – while I’m driving the kids, I have CDs playing – these fill not only me but also my kids – and when I pick my kids up – we go through the six major questions that have my TEAM answer at the end of the day. 

Most of my TEAM and my coaching students commit to ‘The Hour of Power’ each day – which includes 15 minutes each of 1) listening to something positive, 2) reading something positive,  3) journaling to include what you are grateful for today, who you helped today, what was your WIN (or what you were great at), what you learned today, what you could have done better, the three people you met today, and what you are looking forward to tomorrow, and 4) planning your accomplishments for tomorrow – your top 6 things that will move you forward toward your goals—remembering to ‘swallow your frog’ first – that means do the toughest thing on your list first.

Dr. John Maxwell writes:  ‘Do you feel the world is treating you well?  If your attitude toward the world is excellent, you will receive excellent results.  If you feel so-so about the world, your response from the world will be average.  Feel badly about the world and you will seem to have only negative feedback from life.’

Much like ‘Whatever a man sows, this he will also reap’ Galatians 6:7

Dr. Maxwell is ‘on the money’ when he says that we want happiness, acceptance, peace and success and I believe how we go about this is all about attitude.

Think about your dealings with people – would you say success comes more from a product or skill OR from knowing how to get along with people.  I can tell you knowing how to get along with people is so important that John D. Rockefeller said he would pay more for ‘skill with people’ than any other!

Here’s the challenge for both you and me

1)    This is from Dr. John Maxwell –  For one week treat every person we meet without a single exception as the most important person on earth.  John says we will find that they will begin treating us the same way.

2)    This is from me — Commit to the Hour of Power for One Week (it doesn’t have to be done all at one time – it can be done in 15 minute chunks of time)

3)    From Dr. Maxwell –  List two current problems.  Write down your present reactions.  Are they negative?  Your challenge:  Discover at least three possible benefits from each problem.  Now attack the challenge from the benefits standpoints (vs. the problems).

5 Minutes to Happiness . . .

Is it really possible? 

I do my best thinking in a hot bubble bath late at night – and quite a bit of reading.  And that’s exactly when I stumbled upon this short article about Happiness in Woman’s Day Magazine. 

What better time than the New Year to make the decision to be happier. 

When our basic needs are met, food, shelter and safety, it’s largely our attitude that determines our happiness.  But surprisingly, it’s not necessarily more money (think winning the lottery)  that brings the most happiness.

Here’s a link to a study that Woman’s Day did – the study shows how happy we are by state – and the top 10 states for happiness have very average salaries!

Believe it or not, it’s some of the simplest thinks that can bring happiness quickly (5 minutes to smiles) –some of these came from Deb Wolf and others came from me:

• Calling a girlfriend.
• Walking the dog
• Pleasure reading (catch up on your magazines)
• Turning on a favorite song and dancing
• A craft project
• An episode of ‘I Love Lucy’ –yes just 5 minutes of Lucy can have me rolling.
• Holding a baby
  

  Me with my daughter, Amanda 10 years ago (she turned 11 on Jan 4th)

• A walk on the beach
• Sitting in the park
•  A great Cup of Coffee
• Chocolate (my favorite is IsaDelight — Dark Chocolate)
•  Having your kids call just to say ‘Hi’
• Clean Car – Support a Youth Group on Saturday Morning
• Clean Sheets
• Blow some bubbles
•  Fresh Flowers
• Looking a photos (a picture is worth a 1,000 words and can transport you instantly to happy times)
• Girl Scout Cookies (I have cookies on the brain – our Troop starts selling cookies in 10 days)

Even writing this quick blog post brought a smile to my face when I think back on doing each of these activities and how much joy they quickly bring me.  I must admit – even sitting on the sofa next to Princess, my Rottweiler and having her nudge me to pet her can make me smile – even after a challenging day.  Animals and girlfriends can bring quick smiles – good pets and friends love us unconditionally.

Will you make the decision to be more happy in 2012?

Take 5 to 15 minutes of ‘me time’ and refresh yourself – and I’m betting your day will be happier.  Go find a baby or some Girl Scout Cookies – or a turn on the music (Love that Motown)!

WooHoo . . .Christmas!

As kids we can hardly wait and wonder why it can’t be Christmas every day.

As adults, so many wish it didn’t come quite so often.

As for me . . . I love Christmas and look forward to it.  WHY?  Because of the blessings we are able to share.

For the past 20 years, beginning Thanksgiving, I begin preparing to share the JOY of Christmas with children that otherwise might not enjoy this special day. 

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of activity in preparing to serve 59 children from families in need.  This started with our kick-off Annual Toy/Clothing Drive Christmas Party on December 3^rd and then last week was Wysocki Winter Christmas Camp for 11 of our amazing Girl Scouts.    You can read more about this project at http://www.TheSecretSantaProject.org

We had so much fun, baking, creating beautiful crafts and the biggest project of all was wrapping well over 200 gifts for our children which were delivered on Christmas Eve with the help of our moms and dads and Deputy Gonzales.  Our Girl Scouts enjoyed the true meaning of Christmas. We delivered at 3 gifts per child, a lovely hand made wreath for each family, beautiful Christmas Cards made by my daughter’s 5th grade class and Calvary Christian Academy, and ‘The Gift,’ a new Bible (compliments of Calvary Chapel Ft. Lauderdale) and an invitation to join us in hearing God’s word.   Here are a couple of photos from ‘The Santa Express’ on Saturday:

December is the best time to build your business!

Yes, you heard me. 

Unfortunately, the fact is that most people abandon their business from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

I hope this is not you. 

This Season offers us so many amazing opportunities to re-connect with people we don’t see as often as we would like to . . . and what is generally the first question asked? 

“What’s new?”

Be sure that you ask this question first.  Remember, people love to talk about themselves — and it’s much better to be interested than interesting. 

Ask the person questions about what they share.  Be Interested!

The natural thing is for people to ask you ‘And what’s new with you.’ 

And you now have the perfect opportunity to share what you are doing in your direct sales/or network marketing business.  It doesn’t matter if you have just started a business, are a seasoned professional or have recently switched companies . . . your job is to make what you do sound amazing and fun.

Would you not agree that most people are looking for legitimate, simple ways to add additional income to what they already have in place?  Unless you fall into the ‘super wealthy’ category, everyone has been impacted by the economy (whether it’s investments, losing a job, being underemployed, losing a home . . . or), people are looking to bridge that money gap.

Your business could be the key to assisting them.

If you aren’t already comfortable describing what you do (in a short 15-30 second explanation), now is the time to perfect that.  Fifteen seconds is about all you have to grab a stranger’s attention — and 30 to 45 seconds is about how long you will hold an acquaintance’s attention.

So how do you do this?

1.  Identify your goal in advance of attending the event (create interest . . . get a customer . . . recruit a busienss partner)
2.  Tell a Concise Story . . . why are you doing what you do
2.  Did you have an amazing result?
3.  Ask for a referral (hey, do you know anyone you could refer to me?)

Next, once you have written out your pitch, practice it.  Practice it 20 times in front of a mirror.  Practice until you are
comfortable.  Then record yourself.  Record it on your smart phone (most phones have this feature).  Fine tune your pitch. 
Then share it with a few friends and ask for feedback.  Make adjustments as necessary . . .

And, you will find that the parties and gatherings you attend during the Holiday Season will be not only fun gatherings, but
opportunities to add to your business that you will be able to capitalize on.

Be sure to have a small notepad in your handbag where you can confirm their cell phone and best email and depending upon the conversation, confirm that you will keep in touch more this year or set a time to call them to share your business or product.

Are You Accountable?

This can be a tough question that gives some of you a stomach ache?

The first time someone asked me this question, I thought ‘I’m good . . . I do what I say.’

But being accountable is not just about keeping your word or walking your talk, it’s about being true to yourself. 

What does accountable mean?

According to Webster’s Dictionary, ‘accountable’ has two meanings:

1)  Required to explain actions or decions to someone else and
2)  Required to be responsible for something

Who are you accountable to?

Many people will say God, my family, me?  And yes, those are all important.  BUT, what flesh and blood person will say ‘Hey, what have you done to (fill in the blank) that you wanted to accomplish last month (quarter, etc)?  This person is not afraid to ask you tough questions while at the same time be your cheerleader and perhaps even your sounding board.

If you do have an Accountability Partner or Master Mind Team, now is the time to do this exercise with them.  If you don’t have an Accountability Partner (or coach), perhaps now is the time to identify someone.

In addition to outside accountability, I believe in this time of Thanksgiving, it’s important to do a check-in with ourselves.  Essentially looking at our report card for the past year.  Personally, I set goals every Thanksgiving, and just like kids get report cards 4 times a year in school, we need to check in with ourselves at least this often — not annually. 

However, now that the year is almost over, it’s important to get a ‘get a final grade.’ 

If you’re reading this, our paths have probably crossed in some arena because your have an entrepreneurial spirit — even if you are working in a Job.
By the way, I am a BIG proponent of keeping your job (unless you absolutely hate it), even after your business makes as much money as your job.  WHY?
because you are out in the community and connecting with people.  Of course, there will come a time, when you are ready to walk away, but matching
your paycheck should not be the only criteria for giving your notice.

So, back to the grades . . .

Where are you in your business (or soon to be business)?  Did you accomplish what you wanted to this year.  I’ve never heard anyone say YES!

As entrepreneurs, we typically hold ourselves to pretty high standards, but we also, typically get off track and come the end of the year, we have
not accomplished half of what we set out to.

Is this you?

OK, let’s start by giving yourself a grade on your top three goals for 2011?

What were your top three goals for this year?

Did you monetize your business?  That means, have you taken your idea, put action to it, and made money?  That doesn’t necessarily mean have you made a profit? (although that’s the goal )

If this is your first year, more than likely, you have not made money . . . don’t despair.  The critical question is, have you taken action on income producing activities to build your business?  Are you making progress each day, week, and month?

Have you invested in personal development in 2011?  This is absolutely critical.  It is impossible to grow professionally without investing personally.  Personal development always precedes financial incerase.

I also want to ask you where you are in a few other key areas:

1)  Spiritually?  Have you grown in this area of your life?

2)  Family and Personal Relationships?  Have you strengthened important relationships and blocked out key family time?

3)  Taking Care of You?  How are you recharging your batteries?  Exercise, Diet, Personal Development, and even FUN?

4)  Community?  How are you giving back . . . research shows, those who give are richer in all areas of their life . . . and don’t we all want to be RICH . . . (in all areas of our life)?

NOW, the BIG question, is what is the ONE thing you can do in the next 42 days that would make the biggest difference in closing out this year AND starting out 2012 in a positive way, including building your profitable business?

Will you share this with our community?  Even if you are currently at zero, you can end up the year as a hero, if you take action.

Do it today . . . take action and do the evaluation!

As a business owner (or potential business owner), don’t we all want to be successful leaders?  Well sometimes we just end up going down the wrong road, and we lose . . . so how do you know what to do?

Who do you go to for advice?

In my 20+ years in business, I learned to go to people who have done what I want to do . . . and model their actions.  Success leave clues, and if we want the same result, then we need to follow the clues.
One of the people I follow is John Maxwell, a leadership expert, who has trained more than 5 million leaders worldwide (a pretty good record).  John is a NY Times best selling author, with more than 60 titles to his name.

Recently John wrote an article for Success Magazine “8 Ways to Lose in Business . . . Avoid these attitudes if you want to grow and succeed,” and it was such a great article, I wanted to recap the article in case you haven’t seen it–I have written the ‘cliff note version and shared some of my insights in these areas as well:

8 Ways to Lose in Business

1.  Quit Taking Risks.

Many people think it is incompetent people that cause a business to struggle, but what kills us in business is resting on past accomplishments.

It’s easy to to enjoy success in the moment . . . but are you thinking about what and how you will implement your next project successfully OR are you basking in the glory of a past success (maybe one from 5 years ago)?

2.  Rely Totally on Experts and Research to Make Decisions for You.

What is research?  One former CEO refers to research as “an organized method of trying to find out what you are going to do when you cannot do what you are doing now.”

While there are many great consultants who bring value to our business, they key is you need to make the decision for your business and research is only one component.

3.  Always ask yourself “What would the founder have done?”

This might not be an easy answer if you are just starting in business or are struggling.  I recommend you pick a mentor (in your industry), and watch what they do.  Ask them if you can check in with them on a regular basis to ask questions.

While no one knows what a great leader would have done with your particular circumstances, it is a good bet, they would set a winning course of action — they would not lose.

4.  Concentrate on Your Competition Instead of Your Customer.

This is a true nugget because if we forget that our customers are everyting and begin worrying about what our competition is doing, we don’t bring our best game to the table. 

The question to keep in mind is:

Why should your customer do business with you given all the options available to
him, including the option of doing nothing?

  *  Poor service is the number one reason we lose business
  *  The average unhappy customer will share with 9 others
  *  The average happy customer only tells 5 people
  *  It costs between 5 and 10 times more to attract a new customer
     as it does to keep an old one.
  *  Customers will pay more for better service.

5.  Administrative Concerns Take Precedence Over All Others.

Bureaucracy brings growth to a screeching halt. 

6.  Be Inflexible.

Inflexibility really revolves around change and digging in.  Generally, there can be a lot of FEAR (false evidence appearing real) around change. 

Leaders who can adapt quickly and embrace change thrive.  How can we become more flexible?  John Shares strategic thinking and focusing on learning will assist in this area.

7.  Look to Someone Else to Do Your Thinking For You.

The bottom line on this one is ‘Do you spend time growing yourself?’   We must be critical thinkers.

The caution is not to depend upon the thoughts and opinions of others.  Many times people who choose not to think for themselves get bogged down in following rules and regulations . . . they are very legalistic.

8.  Memorize the Motto “That’s Good Enough”

Good enough is rarely ‘good enough,’ and in fact is really nothing more than mediocre.

That might be OK for watering the lawn or making a quick batch of spaghetti . . . but ‘good enough’ is rarely a good think for business.

I have the motto ‘How you do anything . . . is how you do everything.’ It says something about how you approach life.

This question requires serious brain power . . . if you go beyond the surface!

Yes, we all want to be remembered as ‘kind, nice, and a good person,’ but what impact will you have on the lives of others?

Will it be through parenting, being a big brother or big sister, being a great boss or mentor, ttaking out your neighbors garbage cans, volunteering in a disaster area, offering hope to another person, or pershaps mentoring.  There are so many ways we can impact the lives of others . . . the point is to do give with a servant’s heart and do so joyfully (because you absolutely love it)!

Many of you know that I am a BIG fan of Success Magazine.  The publisher, Darren Hardy interviews the most interesting people and the contributing writers really make you tackle tough subjects . . . even if you don’t have a business.  After all, don’t we all want success in our lives?

 In searching for my most current issue, (which I never found because my office is too messy and I obviously didn’t put this issue in the ‘Success’ area), I found the January and February 2011 issues.

 One article jumped out at me that I’d like to share with you . . .

Booker T. Washington

 It was written by Deborah Huson who highlighted Booker T Washington’s message of hard work, morality, and economic self-reliance as the path to freedom.

 In case you don’t know who Booker T. Washington was, he was the foremost black educator and public figure at the turn of the last century.  He was often controversial, but he said what he meant, ‘walked his talk,’ and most definitely made a difference to tens of thousands of people if not hundreds of thousands of people!

Just that one phrase alone has so much meat to it . . . hard work, morality, and economic self-reliance.

Three key principles that if we all applied them, we would see huge benefits both personally and as a country.  Don’t you agree?  But it gets better . . .

These are direct quotes from Booker T . . . and they very clearly speak volumes.  How do you feel after reading them, and more important, what will you do differently?  Have they impacted you?

“If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”

WOW!  So much wisdom in just 7 quotes.  Deborah Huso did a great job of giving us a birds eye view into Booker T’s Life . . . there is so much to share about his philosophy, his life, and how he impacted and influenced others, but just contemplating the quotes can help us to be more mindful of others AND take actions that will have lasting results.

I encourage you to track down the February issue of Success and read the entire article or perhaps even Booker T’s biography.  Who we become is influenced by the people we spend time with, the books we read, and the things we listen to.  There are so many books (many of them biographies) that have significantly influenced how I think and impacted how I chose to design my life.

So back to the question “How do you want to make a difference?”  Generally, when we are younger, life is all about us (or very ME centered).  As we mature, we understand that it is more blessed to give than receive (or take).  Personally, I can think of no better way to make a difference than look for a challenge and provide a solution where your efforts can impact others, who in turn will pay it forward.

Seeing the changes people create because I’ve unlocked a door for them and shown them a new path is amazing.  Watching the girls in our Troop grow in their understanding of themselves and others and how their efforts can make a difference in this world is priceless.   My hope to influence others who grow and become influencers and ‘doers of good’ themselves.

Points for contemplation:  1)  Do I ‘walk my talk’?  2)  How am I am I making a difference?  And, finally 3)  What is my legacy . . . How will people remember me?
